A silk scarf featuring the iconic ‘Cambridge Alumnae Banner’ which resides at Newnham.
The Banner, which features the motto, ‘Better is Wisdom than Weapons of War’ was designed by Mary Lowndes and worked on by students of Newnham and Girton. It was carried by the Cambridge contingent in the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies’ procession of 13 June 1908 and in several suffrage processions between 1908 and 1913. The stencilled irises are for Newnham, the daisies for Girton.
The scarf is a beautiful way to celebrate the history of Newnham every day.
